چکیده

During the last trimester of pregnancy single and twin-bearing ewes were fed chopped oat hay ad libitum and supplements (300 g/day) of cottonseed meal (CSM) (T1) or barley grain plus urea and sodium sulfate (Bar+N+S) (T2), or CSM and oat hay restricted to the level consumed by the T2 ewes (T3). T1 ewes consumed 47% more hay and approximately 13% more digestible organic matter than T2 ewes. T1 ewes had higher liveweight and condition score at parturition than T2 or T3 ewes, and birth weight of single lambs was also higher (P c 0.05). During lactation all ewes were fed oat hay ad libitum and 300 g CSM/day. Milk production at day 7 was lower for T2 (P c 0.05), but colostrum availability, milk production at days 14 and 21, and lamb growth were not affected by treatments during pregnancy. The lower birth weight of single lambs from ewes given treatments T2 and T3 appeared to be due principally to a lower roughage intake by these ewes during late pregnancy.

Production responses of two genetic different types of Merino sheep subjected to different nutritional levels.

The primary selection objective in the South African Mutton Merino is meat production, while wool plays a secondary role. The Merino, on the other hand is selected for wool production. Respectively 20 and 23 of each genetic different type of ewes were used in a 15-week indoor study to quantify the influence of nutrient intake on certain production traits when fed at different levels of their re...

Effect of Repeated Annual Multi-steroid Immunisation on the Reproductive Performance of Fine-wool Merino Sheep

In fine-wool Merino ewes, immunisation against a mixture of steroids was compared with androstenedione immunisation alone and with no treatment to evaluate its long term effectiveness in improving reproductive performance by increasing fecundity. Using 2 prototype multi-steroid vaccines in field trials conducted for 4 consecutive years, gains in lambing percentage were consistently obtained, wi...

The effect of melatonin treatment on wool growth and thyroxine secretion in sheep

Melatonin implants are commonly used to control sheep reproduction during the winter solstice, but their effect on wool growth is unclear. In this study, wool growth was measured in 17 Assaf (carpet wool), 21 Rasa Aragonesa (medium wool) and 20 Merino (fine wool) ewes after inserting melatonin implants in January, February and April, and 13 ewes were used as control. All ewes were previously ov...

Performance, Health Status, and Colostrum Yield of Twin-Bearing Afshari Ewes as Well as Growth and Survival of Their Offspring are not Affected by Increasing Dietary Metabolizable Protein in Late Pregnancy

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two dietary metabolizable protein (MP) concentrations on the performance and health status of Afshari ewes and survival and growth of their lambs during late pregnancy. For 6 weeks prior to lambing, 32 Afshari ewes were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments, containing low (LMP) or high (HMP) MP concentrations. The ewes in LMP (n=16)...
